In its first two games, both at home, Veritas Christian’s eight-man football team scored 98 points.

Now the question is: Can the Eagles maintain that torrid point pace on the road?

“I think our guys will be ready to play,” coach Doug Bennett said. “We need to keep the momentum going and keep focused and not be too excited about the start we’ve had.”

Veritas Christian will travel to the Capital City tonight to tangle with Topeka Cair Paravel. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Topeka High’s Chandler Field.

The Eagles, playing a varsity schedule for the first time, pounced on Kansas City, Mo., East, 58-12, in their opener, then rocked Wichita Sunrise, 40-19, last week. Both games were at Westwick Rugby Complex, Veritas Christian’s home field.

Cair Paravel opened its season Friday, bowing to St. Mary’s Academy, 48-20.

“The St. Mary’s coach told me Paravel is improving,” Bennett said. “We expect a competitive game.”

So far the Eagles have been too much for the competition. Led by halfbacks Jesse Schultz and Paul Kempf, a former Lawrence High player, and linebacker Andrew Bartlow, Veritas has dominated its first two foes.

“The competition hasn’t been that bad,” Bennett said, “but I think we’ve had better athletes and harder hitters.”

For Bennett, the focus tonight will be improvement. After two giant steps forward, he doesn’t want to take a step back.

“We’ve been playing well,” Bennett said, “but I think we can play better.”

The Eagles will play five of their next six games outside of Lawrence. Their only home game during that stretch is Sept. 25 against Wichita Trinity.
