The Rev. Keith Charles Shumway

Mr. Shumway died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Brandon Woods in Lawrence.

He was born March 7, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Charles William and Leona “Pauline” Pullins Shumway. He attended schools in the Oklahoma City area and graduated from Guthrie Masonic Children’s Home in Guthrie, Okla. He went to Louisiana Polytech University at Ruston, La., and then transferred to Duke University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He later attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge for a year before being accepted to the Federated Theological faculty of the University of Chicago, where he was ordained.

Mr. Shumway served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was commissioned as an ensign and later became a lieutenant junior grade. He also served in the Navy Reserves for 10 years.

He was appointed head of history and political science at Ottawa University, and was instrumental in the development of Ottawa University-Kansas City. He was also dean of Ottawa University and vice president for academic affairs until he retired in 1984. He then worked as a civilian contractor, running a computer center for the Marine Corps Reserves until 1989.

He was a member of Skilton Music Club, Orchid Society, Kansas Retired Teachers Assn., AARP, Masonic Blue Lodge and Master Counselor of DeMolay. He was active in Rotary and a leader of the Christian Endeavor Society.

He married Bettie Sue White on April 17, 1948, in Sicily Island, La., She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Mark, Ottawa; three daughters, Polly McCall, Ottawa, Susan Shumway, Basehor, and Wanda Temm, Overland Park; a brother, Robert, Vidalia, La.; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
