Peek into John Lennon’s antique ‘iPod’

Half of one of the great songwriting teams of the 20th century, John Lennon had a unique musical sensibility. His tastes, influences and favorite songs are the subject of “John Lennon’s Jukebox” on “Great Performances” (7 p.m., PBS).

In 1989, a collector discovered an old Discomatic jukebox that once belonged to Lennon. A portable, programmable record player the size of a small suitcase, the Discomatic contained 41 of Lennon’s favorite 45s. Created in the years before cassette mix-tapes and iPod playlists, this antique offers insights into Lennon’s musical development.

“Jukebox” features interviews with the musicians whose records Lennon owned, as well as insights from the late Beatle via archival radio interviews. Lennon is unafraid to admit how much he “borrowed” from others. “I studied the records,” he explains. “What are they saying? How are they saying it? How do they make this music? What are they doing that excites me?”
