Making the grade

Appearance matters for school reports

New York — Like it or not, appearance is a factor when people form their first impressions, and that goes for teachers grading reports, too.

The new “School Smarts Planner” from American Girl Library suggests some simple final touches that can help students really “make the grade.”

The most important thing is to make sure the work looks neat because brilliant context could get lost in a paper that looks like it’s been run over by a bus. And when revisions are done, type or write the final draft with all the new changes added.

On the cover page, use a bigger type size for the title of the paper, and center it in the middle of the page. A student’s name, the date and the name of the class (for instance, seventh-grade English) also should appear on the cover page.

A graphic or artistic touch along the bottom border of the cover page might make the paper a little more inviting.

The report itself should be double-spaced to make it easier to read and to leave room for notes from the teacher.

Frame the words of the text with clean, wide margins. Don’t forget to number the pages.

Different teachers prefer reports in slightly different formats, so remember to follow any specific directions given to the class.
