l Ten true freshman scholarship players suited for the Jayhawks, but six others were not in uniform, leading to speculation the half dozen would take red-shirt seasons. The six are RB Gary Green, LB Joe Mortensen, S Raymond Brown, OL Matt Darton, WR Dexton Fields and TE Jim Reuber.

• True freshmen who played were DL Todd Haselhorst and James McClinton and WR Marcus Henry.
• OG Bob Whitaker was the first KU player affected by the new rule that allows the referee to announce the number of a player who commits a foul. On KU’s first possession, Whitaker was identified following a face-mask infraction. In the second quarter, Whitaker’s No. 77 was called twice more — for a chop block and for illegal procedure.
• Tulsa wasted a golden opportunity early in the second quarter when James Kilian’s apparent seven-yard TD pass to Jermaine Landrum was wiped out by an illegal-receiver-downfield flag. The Hurricane had to settle for a Brad DeVault field goal and, as it turned out, their only points all night.
• Cornerback Theo Baines, a juco transfer, made a diving interception of a Kilian pass midway through the second quarter, but the Jayhawks couldn’t take advantage of the turnover.
• KU nearly wasted a fumble recovery by DE Jermial Ashley at the TU 35-yard-line with 1:16 remaining before intermission, but Beck booted a 51-yard field goal against the wind with :13 showing to forge the 3-3 halftime deadlock.
• TU and Kansas combined for a paltry 204 yards in the first half — 124 by Tulsa and 80 by Kansas. KU had 57 yards passing and 23 rushing, all by tailback Clark Green.
• KU linebacker Gabriel Toomey had to be helped off the field at the 1:51 mark of the third quarter. Toomey appeared to have suffered a serious ankle injury, but he returned to duty on the next series wearing a high-top shoe.
• KU squandered another scoring opportunity early in the fourth quarter when the Jayhawks couldn’t punch it in from the one-yard line on fourth down on a series set up by Brandon Rideau’s punt block. Moments later, however, KU salvaged two points when NG Tim Allen sacked Kilian in the end zone. Rideau also was credited with a punt deflection in the first half.
• Kansas was forced to use its third and final timeout with 12:18 remaining. “I screwed up clock management a couple of times,” Mangino said. “A couple of those timeouts were my fault.”
• KU’s seven sacks were credited to Nick Reid, Kevin Kane, David McMillan, Jermial Ashley, Theo Baines, Tim Allen and Brandon Perkins. Strong safety Tony Stubbs was the Jayhawks’ tackling leader with nine. Baines and Ashley also were credited with two passes broken up apiece. Kane and Baines had the two interceptions.
• Senior defensive tackle Travis Watkins didn’t play in the second half. Watkins limped slightly as he left the field after the game.
• Kickoff temperature was 89 degrees under mostly sunny skies with the wind out of the southeast at 14 mph. … Former All-American running back Curtis McClinton’s name was unveiled in the north end zone’s ring of honor at halftime. … KU officials pegged the crowd at 40,646, about 10,000 shy of capacity.
