Labor Day weekend features quantity, not quality

For the college football fan who never can get enough, this weekend is for you.

With the NFL season a week away, college football has practically taken over Labor Day weekend. Games began Thursday night and continue through Monday.

Top-ranked Southern California and No. 23 Oregon are the only Top-25 teams not in action. The one drawback: It’s a quantity over quality situation.

There are few juicy matchups among the top teams. The best game on the schedule was postponed because of Hurricane Frances. No. 5 Florida State will play at No. 6 Miami on Friday night instead of Monday night. Also, No. 11 Florida postponed its game today in Gainesville against Middle Tennessee.

Most of the top teams will ease into their seasons by hosting nonconference patsies — though don’t try suggesting that to the coaches expected to ring up an easy W.

“First games are always scary because you don’t have previous film,” said Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, whose Tigers are a 33-point favorite against Arkansas State. “You have to be able to adjust to anything that happens.”

The fun started Thursday when No. 20 Utah’s Alex Smith threw for three touchdowns, rushed for two more and finished with 435 yards of offense. The Utes backed up their first preseason ranking with a 41-21 win over Texas A&M.

Mike Price also made his debut as UTEP coach in a 41-9 loss against Arizona State.

Friday night was light, with Washington State at New Mexico being the only game.

After a full load today, Sunday’s slate is highlighted by Syracuse at No. 24 Purdue in the afternoon and No. 14 Tennessee playing host to UNLV at night. Both games will be televised nationally.

“My opinion is it would be awfully nice to play at 1 o’clock every Saturday, but I think we also understand what drives this thing,” Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni said. “To have that kind of exposure, there’s some advantages to that so there’s a price to pay for some inconvenience.”

Even without Florida State-Miami, there’s still a couple of games scheduled for Monday.
