S. Flory Diehl

Services for S. Flory Diehl, 84, Lawrence, are pending and will be announced by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Mr. Diehl died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Windsor Place.

He was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Nokesville, Va., the son of Daniel Saylor and Vernie Flory Diehl. He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1943, and pursued graduate studies in mathematics and statistics at American University and George Washington University from 1943 to 1948.

An airplane pilot since 1943, Mr. Diehl was an M.P. at Patuxent River Naval Station during World War II.

He taught high school geometry, chemistry and physics from 1943 to 1945, was a statistician for Census Bureau from 1945 to 1947, an air intelligence specialist at U.S. Department of Air Force from 1948 to 1951, and head of Work Measurement Branch, Executive Office of Secretary of Navy from 1952 to 1957. He worked for Analytical Census Bureau from 1957 to 1966, and was an educational research specialist at Department of Education in 1966 until his retirement.

Mr. Diehl was 33rd degree Mason, most illustrious grand master of the Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Maryland, most excellent grand high priest of Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Maryland, most excellent great chief of Grand Council of Knight Masons of USA, Knight Commandry Court of Honor, inspector general honorary 33rd degree, and potentate of the Shriners’ Almas Temple, Washington, D.C.

He married Nettie M. Diehl in 1946, in Washington, D.C. She died April 18, 2003.

A son, Wayne B., died Feb. 7, 2002.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Elwell, Lawrence; a brother, Ray, Frederick, Md.; three sisters, Mae Mann, Edna Britton and Ruth Owens, all of Nokesville, Va.; and six grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Shriners Children’s Hospital or Alzheimer’s Assn., sent in care of the funeral home.
