HINU seeking first victory

When Haskell Indian Nations University’s football team met Trinity Bible College last year, the result was an astounding 60-0 victory for the Fightin’ Indians.

After last weekend’s 7-6 season-opening loss to Waldorf, the small North Dakota school might be just what the doctor ordered for the Fightin’ Indians.

Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at Haskell Stadium.

HINU coach Eric Brock just hopes his players will be over their disappointment today.

“We were really expecting to win that game,” Haskell coach Eric Brock said of the loss to Waldorf. “It just was not meant to be. We’re coming out trying to make sure this game we don’t make mistakes.”

The Indians weren’t plagued by turnovers, but they were hampered by too many penalties. The defense, however, forced Waldorf to punt on 15 of its 16 possessions.

“Defensively, we played pretty well,” Brock said. “But it was not good enough, because we gave up a touchdown.”

Trinity, located in Ellendale, N.D., will be playing its season opener. Coach Rusty Bentley’s team is coming off of an 0-9 campaign a year ago.

Last year’s win over Trinity was the only time Haskell scored more than 21 points.

“This is extremely important,” Brock said of posting a victory today. “We want to make sure these guys are rewarded for the hard work they put in during two-a-days.”
