Get thee to a nunnery (or the Hallmark Channel)

“Murder Without Conviction” (7 p.m. Sunday, Hallmark) is the television equivalent of comfort food. Watching it is rather like dining on an unspectacular meatloaf. You’ve experienced this a thousand times before, but what’s not to like? It includes such shopworn ingredients as a carefree Mother Superior (Patty Duke) and a crime-solving ex-nun (Megan Ward), and a clear moral choice between really good people and a town without pity.

Raised by Mother Joseph (Duke) since the age of 13, Christine (Ward) leaves the order to explore the wider world. She visits her one surviving relative, a mentally disabled cousin who lives at Greenwillow, a psychiatric facility. She learns that Greenwillow’s residents are frightened by the arrival of James Talley (David Proval), a disturbed young man accused, but never convicted, of conspiring with his twin (also Proval) to kill their mother 30 years earlier.

Still endowed with the spunky nun energy and fervor that she learned from Mother Joseph, Christine vows to prove the twins’ innocence and to save Greenwillow. She does this all in the face of local hostility and evil tabloid journalists. But she does have the assistance of a handsome, noble young police detective (Morgan Weisser). Will she succeed? Are the twins good and not evil? Will the hunky cop help Christine ease out of her vows of chastity? Do you have to ask? Stop talking and finish your meatloaf!
