Wilson takes first at Topeka tourney

Topeka — Lawrence High junior golfer Sydney Wilson didn’t wait long this fall to win her first event, taking first place Thursday in a six-team tournament at Shawnee Country Club.

Wilson shot an 80 Wednesday, beating the next-closest golfer, Washburn Rural’s Abbey Weddle, by two strokes.

Rural won the team competition.

“Today she hit the ball well,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “She didn’t play as well as she would have liked, but she definitely represented LHS in a good manner.”

The Lions could not compete as a team because they only brought three golfers to the event. Whitney Juneau shot 105 and Lauren Miller 111.

LHS next competes Sept. 16 at the Alvamar Invitational.
