French dies at 81

? Services will be Saturday for Clarence Nelson (Bud) French Jr., a former Kansas University football standout who died Tuesday at the age of 81.

French was a record-setting halfback on the Jayhawks’ 1947 Orange Bowl team. He still ranks No. 2 on KU’s career punt-return yardage chart.

After graduation, French worked for 33 years as a teacher, coach and counselor at Central and Westport high schools in Kansas City, Mo. Later, he worked nine years at a K.C. grade school before retiring in 1992.
