Hutchinson ? Lawrence High and Free State High placed 1-2 Saturday at the Western regional gymnastics meet.

As a result, each team qualified for Saturday’s state meet at Olathe East.

Lawrence High’s Mallory West placed first in the all-around, and Free State’s Sindra Schuler placed second.

For LHS, firsts were claimed by ninth-grader West (beam) and Kara Kellison (floor). Schuler won on bars for FSHS.

It marks the first time in coach Kathy Johnson’s six years both squads reached state.

“It was a good meet by both teams. They did very well, and all are excited about going to state next week,” Johnson said.
