KU police seek help in false fire alarm cases

Kansas University police are offering a cash reward for tips leading to an arrest in a series of false fire alarms at McCollum Hall.

The residence hall has had an increased number of false alarms this semester, said Capt. Schuyler Bailey, a KU Public Safety Office spokesman. One person has been identified and arrested so far, he said.

Anyone with information about the alarms is asked to call the department at 864-5900. Callers who want to remain anonymous can call KU CrimeStoppers at 864-8888.

CrimeStoppers offers a reward up to $1,000.

Bailey reminded students that making a false alarm is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

False alarms drain police and firefighters’ resources and make people less likely to respond to a real alarm, Bailey said.

Education supporters to stage march, rally

Supporters of greater funding for public education will rally and march Saturday from Buford M. Watson Jr. Park to the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Organizers of the Get Out The Vote/Support School Funding March and Rally say public schools need smaller classes and are not getting enough money. They are urging voters to choose candidates who will give more money to education.

The march, sponsored by Kansas Families United for Public Education, is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
