Plan would push back first day of school

On Monday night the Lawrence school board looked at drafts of calendars for the next two school years. Both calendars would start school the third week of August, take a shorter winter break than this year and finish the school year at the end of May, like this year. Some parents and students complained about an earlier-than-usual start this school year.

A member of the calendar committee said the group would make minor changes to the proposal and bring it back to the board in November.

Also Monday, the board:

  • approved spending $21,805 for new playground equipment at Cordley School. The new equipment could be installed before December.
  • approved selling an east Lawrence building for $450,000. The building near Learnard Avenue and 19th Street previously housed several district programs and has been vacant since the end of last year. Community Living Opportunities, which serves people with disabilities, will buy the building.
