Baha’i

Baha’i 101, a multimedia series that explores the history and fundamentals of the Baha’i faith, will be offered for eight weeks, beginning Sunday.

Chris Hamilton, a professor at Washburn University, will facilitate the class, which will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave.

The course is co-sponsored by the Baha’i clubs of Kansas University and Washburn University, and the Baha’i community of Lawrence.

Anyone who is interested in learning about the Baha’i faith is welcome to participate.

Rising to Serve, a study circle using the Ruhi method of teaching, will be facilitated by Caitlin and Andrew Johnson at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in Alcove A in the Kansas Union. Classes begin Tuesday.

Devotional services are at 7 p.m. Sundays at Unity Church, 900 Madeline Lane.

Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace, will have its annual fall festival at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the home of LeRoy and Linda Teichmann.

Participants are encouraged to bring hot dogs, buns, picnic foods and lawn chairs. All are invited to attend this family event.

Bible study on Daniel will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Notes are free.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway, will have a fall harvest party Wednesday.

A hot dog feed will begin at 5:30 p.m., along with games, a fun zone, cotton candy, popcorn and other activities. There will be a “tour” of different Bible stories.

Youth will begin a study, “Life on the Edge — Me and My World,” Nov. 3.

Episcopal Lutheran Campus Ministry

Episcopal Lutheran Campus Ministry welcomes Gerald Mansholt, Bishop of Central States Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, as the guest preacher at the 5 p.m. Sunday worship at Canterbury House, 1116 La.

Mansholt will join participants for dinner and discussion after worship.

First Baptist Church

Sunday worship services at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive, will be entirely led by laypeople in celebration of “Laity Sunday.”

John DeMott, a retired journalist and journalism professor, will preach during both services. Musical offerings will be performed by Neal and Jenny Purvis, as well as the chancel choir.

The church’s Family Life Ministry will have a Halloween carnival Oct. 31 in the Roger Williams Room. People can wear costumes.

The church will be host to the Greater Lawrence Christian Men’s breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Oct. 30, featuring guest speaker Ken Canfield, author of “Seven Secrets of Effective Fathering.”

First United Methodist Church

A Senior Sunday Art Show will be Sunday in Brady Hall at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Art work created by “senior” members of the church will be on display from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kansas University United Methodist Campus Ministry will provide a chili/soup lunch as a fund-raiser from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The group Hands of Glory will present a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday in Brady Hall.

A free concert will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Coffin Sports Complex on the campus of Haskell Indian Nations University. The concert is sponsored by the school’s athletic department, Morris Baptist Center and Haskell Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Lawrence Evangelical Friends Church

Lawrence Evangelical Friends Church, 1601 N.H., will have its annual homecoming Sunday.

The choir from Barkley College will perform at 10:30 a.m., followed by a carry-in dinner.

Lawrence 1st Ward

The children of the Lawrence 1st Ward and Wakarusa Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will present the Sacrament Meeting programs in their respective wards Sunday.

First Ward’s program will be at 9 a.m., and Wakarusa Valley Ward’s will be at 11 a.m.

The primary children, ages 3 to 11, have prepared songs and speaking parts of the theme “Families Can be Together Forever.”

Lawrence 2nd Ward’s primary program will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 31.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive, will have a harvest party at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31 for the public.

The church will have its Veterans Service at 10 a.m. Nov. 7. All veterans and families are invited to come for this special service honoring all those who have served, and currently serve, the United States.

A dinner for veterans and their families who participate will be served afterward.

Moms In Touch International

The Kansas Moms In Touch Rally, “There’s No Place Like HOME … Praying Our Children HOME,” will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 13 at First Covenant Church, 2625 Magnolia, Salina.

Participants will learn how to pray for their children and their schools and be encouraged in their own prayer lives.

Moms In Touch International is an interdenominational organization of mothers, grandmothers and others meeting weekly to pray for their children and their schools.

Registration is $15 per person and includes a boxed lunch.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will sponsor a community workday at 9 a.m. today.

Volunteers will meet at the church and car pool to various work sites. Work on Project Linus will take place in the Mayflower Room of the church. Volunteers will meet back at noon for lunch at Plymouth.

There will be a combined service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The plant and bake sale committee will have its fall bulb sale during coffee hour Sunday in the Mayflower Room.

An intergenerational event, “Who ARE All These People: Communion of Saints,” will begin with a meal at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the church hall of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

Stull United Methodist Church, 251 N. 1600 Road, will have its 14th annual sausage/pancake fund-raiser from 7 a.m. to noon Nov. 6.

Food and crafts will be for sale, and there will be a silent auction on gift baskets.

The event will raise money to refurbish the church’s stained-glass windows.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Clean-Up & Carb Day will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Participants will meet for “coffee and carbs” and then help clean the church.

Part three of the video presentation, “The Christian Story: The Reformation,” by Martin Marty, will be shown at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday adult forum in the parish hall.

Tickets for the annual Ploughman’s Lunch will be on sale in the parish hall after both Sunday services. Cost is $6 per person for soup, homemade apple pie, cheese, bread and a beverage.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road, will have a celebration of its history in the city today in the commons area just inside the main door of Lawrence High School.

Registration and coffee will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a day of lectures and discussions. Cost is $20 per person; registrations will be taken at the door. Cost includes breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner, plus lectures. The event is open to the community.

Program begins with a statement of welcome by John Blevins, a member of the Unitarian Universalist Assn.’s national board of directors.

Roger Martin will speak on “The Beginning of Everything: The Intersection of Scientific Knowledge with Religious Belief.”

Michael O’Brien, member of the Lawrence fellowship, will follow with the topic “Unitarians in Early Kansas and Lawrence.”

Other presenters and topics include: Karen Bentley, the historic Unitarian bell from the first church in Lawrence; the Rev. Bobbie Groth; the Rev. Ephraim Nute, the first Unitarian minister in Kansas and Lawrence; Nancy Heege, executive director of the Prairie Star District, “Looking Forward”; and Barry Crawford, Washburn University, “Re-imagining Christian Origins: Didn’t Mel Gibson Miss the Point?”

Afternoon concludes with Dennis Dailey, professor in Kansas University’s School of Social Welfare, speaking on the topic, “Religious Freedom, Academic Freedom and Sex Education in a Hostile Environment.”

Unity Church of Lawrence

A follow-up panel and discussion of issues raised by the 1983 TV movie “The Day After” and today’s nuclear threat will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane.

The movie, which was largely filmed in Lawrence and featured many of the city’s residents, was screened several times this week in town.

West Side Presbyterian Church

A two-day driving course, “55-Alive,” sponsored by the AARP, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.
