Highway patrol blames bus crash on passenger

October 20, 2004

— A Greyhound bus carrying 27 people veered off Interstate 70 yesterday west of WaKeeney after a passenger grabbed the steering wheel, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Greyhound spokeswoman Kim Plaskett said only one person received minor injuries after the bus, headed to Denver from Chicago, went into a ditch and traveled about 200 yards before coming to a stop. The bus received only minor damage, she said.

The driver and 26 passengers were stranded for about seven hours while the Highway Patrol investigated the scene and Greyhound sent another bus to continue the trip, Plaskett said.

The Trego County Prosecutor's office said charges likely would be filed today against the 33-year-old Florida man who grabbed the steering wheel.
