LHS doubles team advances to state

? Lawrence High’s Shannon Wanna and Katie Robertson qualified for the Class 6A state tennis tournament Tuesday by reaching the regional semifinals. The duo went 2-2 to place fourth.

Wanna and Robertson were assured a berth at state, which starts Friday at Topeka, after defeating Free State’s Meghan Bock and Joanna Loewen 9-3 in the first round and eliminating Olathe East 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. They fell in the semifinals to Topeka High, 9-8 (7-5) and fell in the consolation match to Olathe East, 8-3.

“They were terrific. They exceeded the expectations of almost everybody,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. “They played their tails off.”

The regional, which was postponed by rain Monday, was scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Indian Creek Rec Center. The Kansas State High School Activities Assn. allowed tournament organizers to move the event indoors — something the KSHSAA does only as a last result — after more rain fell Tuesday. The event proceeded at a slow pace because only three courts were available at the indoor facility.
