Office workers claim $214M Powerball prize

A group of employees at a Delaware printing firm is stepping forward to claim a $214.7 million Powerball jackpot, a lawyer for the group said Tuesday.

The lawyer, George B. Smith, said the winners — 33 employees at Sussex Printing Corp. who took part in an office pool — chose the cash option of almost $117 million, rather than annuity payments stretching over 29 years.

“We had a group meeting last night,” Smith said in a telephone interview. “I think they’re still stunned.”

He said after taxes, each of the workers would receive about $2.2 million.

Smith said the winners made up roughly three-fourths of the work force at Sussex Printing, which publishes a local advertising shopper called The Guide.

Videographer pleads in immigration charges

A Pakistani man arrested after a police officer saw him videotaping skyscrapers and landmarks in Charlotte pleaded guilty Tuesday to five charges, none related to terrorism.

Under a plea agreement, Kamran Akhtar, 35, faces up to six months in prison before being deported. The charges carried a maximum of 33 years in prison.

Federal authorities are still trying to determine whether the New York City resident has any links to terrorism. However, they have said he is not on any terrorism watch list, and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said in August that he had not been tied to terrorism.

Akhtar pleaded guilty to immigration violations, making false statements, failing to leave the United States and possessing false identification.
