American detained 3 years returns to Saudi Arabia

A U.S. citizen who was captured on the Afghanistan battlefield and held without charges for nearly three years has been freed and returned Monday to Saudi Arabia, his lawyer said.

A military plane carrying Yaser Esam Hamdi landed in Riyadh, Frank Dunham Jr. said. Hamdi’s case led to a Supreme Court decision limiting the president’s powers to indefinitely hold enemy combatants.

Hamdi will be not be charged with any crime under an agreement negotiated by his lawyer and the Justice Department.

He was born in Louisiana in 1980 to Saudi parents. He was captured on a battlefield in Afghanistan in late 2001 during the fight against the Taliban regime, but he said he was merely trying to get out of the country.

Suspected Mafia burial site yields human remains

Four human bones were unearthed Monday from the reputed Mafia burial grounds in Queens — the first significant find after a week of fruitless digging.

The bones were found clustered together in a marshy, wet area of the vacant lot on Ruby Street, said FBI Special Agent Joe Valiquette.

The FBI began digging last Monday, searching for as many as five men believed to have been killed by the Mafia and buried in the desolate area of Ozone Park.

Investigators believe the site may contain the remains of four or more men killed by either Gambino or Bonanno mobsters.

$214.7M Powerball ticket sold

A Powerball ticket worth $214.7 million — the 10th largest lottery jackpot on record — was sold in Delaware, but the winner had not yet come forward Monday, Powerball officials said.

The winning numbers drawn Saturday were 1, 3, 10, 47, 48 and the Powerball, 27. More than 68.1 million tickets were sold for the prize, the sixth largest Powerball jackpot on record.

Wayne Lemons, Delaware’s lottery director, advised the winner not to rush into his office.

“Take a very deep breath, take another, wait and talk to the best lawyers and tax advisers, and put the ticket in a safe place,” Lemons said.
