Election Day, Nov. 2, is less than a month away and the Kids Voting Coalition is working to offer students in grades kindergarten through 12 an authentic voting experience at the polls. More individual volunteers are needed to help at Kids Voting tables before and after school at polling sites throughout Douglas County, including rural voting locations. Shifts last approximately two hours and may be scheduled at a voting location convenient to the volunteer.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Salvation Army, 946 N.H., is looking for three to four new volunteers to serve in the meal program as the weather cools and the shelter and meal kitchen serves more people. Volunteers will help prepare and serve the evening meal to shelter guests. For more information, call Christine Cress, 843-4188.

l Brandon Woods Retirement Community’s Halloween Carnival for elementary school-aged children will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at Brandon Woods, 1501 Inverness Drive. Volunteers are needed to add to the fun, help with games and activity booths for children, serve party treats, and other needs. Costumes are encouraged, but nothing too scary or gory.   • The Jayhawk Support Services for Elders program is seeking volunteers to provide financial management assistance to seniors 60 or older. Volunteers will help with bill paying, checkbook balancing and asset management. Volunteers are screened, trained and bonded. Training sessions include financial and legal issues affecting seniors.   • The American Cancer Society is looking for committee volunteers for the Relay For Life of Lawrence. A meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital to celebrate this year’s success and kick off the new relay season in Lawrence. Volunteers will organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, and plan entertainment. For more information, contact Tina Yates at 749-2985.
