FCE and 4-H News

The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met Sept. 21 in Deal Six Auditorium. Susan Krumm presented a slide program on “Extension in the Future.”

The FCE Fall Festival will be Oct. 20 in Building 21 North at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The Rev. Richard Preis, of Kansas City, Mo., will give the program “The Gospel According to Broadway.”

The following officers were elected: Myrna Hartford, president; Margaret Fuston, vice president; Genny Hunsinger, secretary; Eda Thomason, treasurer; and Darlene Bright, public relations. Pauline Nunemaker was reappointed historian and also named to the Glenna Felts Memorial Committee. Darlene Bright was reappointed chairwoman of the FCE Red Cross Cookie Project.

Margaret and Ross Wulfkuhle were nominated for Outstanding FCE Family Award, and Darlene Bright was nominated for Heart of FCE Award.

The next Red Cross blood drive will be Nov. 10 at First Christian Church. Belleview and 59’ers FCE units will each furnish five dozen cookies.

The Lone Star 4-H Club met Sept. 13 at the Lone Star Church. Members were reminded of the following dates: Record book and pin application deadline, Sept. 21; Record book screening for Leavenworth County, Oct. 13; National 4-H Week, Sunday through Saturday; Ambassador and Citizenship Washington Focus application deadline, Friday; Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, Nov. 19-21 at Rock Springs 4-H Ranch; and North Central Region Volunteer Forum, Nov. 11-14 in Indianapolis. Members interested in attending the volunteer forum should call Mary Berg.

The club elected the following new officers: Grant Metsker, president; Callie Fishburn, vice president; Libby Queen, secretary; Christine Caffey, treasurer; Leslie Queen, junior president; Haley Parker, junior vice president; Mackenzie Flory, junior secretary; Chris Berg, junior treasurer; Alison Mesler, reporter; Marla Metsker, parliamentarian; Tyler Kapelle, historian; Mackenzie Flory, Haley Parker and Michael Penny, recreation leaders; Rebecca Hinshaw and Michael Krumm, song leaders; and John Berg and Callie Fishburn, council representatives.

The next meeting will be Oct. 11 at the Lone Star Church. It will be the club’s project fair and enrollment.

India Family and Community Education will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the home of Regina Shaver. Genny Hunsinger will give a program on Tasmania.

Douglas County Family and Community Education in cooperation with K-State Research & Extension Family and Consumer Sciences is offering the program “Breathing Easy: Controlling Asthma Triggers” at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St.

The program will be given by Dr. Ronald Weiner.

To register, call the Extension Office at 843-7058. The program is free and open to the public.

Stull Busy Beavers 4-H Club met Sept. 13. Members answered roll call by naming their favorite sport. Members were reminded that the deadline to turn in record books was Oct. 1. National 4-H Week was Oct. 3-9. The club achieved all of the goals it had set for the 2003-2004 4-H year. Members played tag for recreation.

The club will have a hayrack ride and wiener roast at 6:30 p.m. today on the Schumann’s property.

The Douglas County 4-H Horse Project met Sept. 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The meeting was called to order by Connor Nottingham. A program was given by Darby Zaremba and her daughter Reagan and Linda Kay. The club voted to give Amy Andrews a $500 scholarship for college.

The next meeting will be Oct. 18 at the fairgrounds.

The Jayhawk 4-H Club met Sept. 13 at Grant Community Center. Dulce Schultz presided. Members answered roll call by giving the name of their favorite animals.

The club voted for new officers. The results will be announced at Monday’s meeting when the officers will be installed.

Members discussed their trip to the Kansas City Zoo and Imax Theatre in November. Ideas for National 4-H week also were discussed. Bridget Falley gave a talk on how to organize a weekly agenda.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Grant Community Center.
