Stephen Jr. and Laura Blanchard, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Gavin Thomas Blanchard, born Sept. 22, 2004, in Overland Park. He has a brother, Gunner, 13.

Scott and Carrie Fewins, Linwood, announce the birth of a daughter, Eliza Mae Brynna Fewins, born Sept. 25, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She has a sister, Chloe Jo, 6, and a brother, Brandt, 4.

Maternal grandparents are Ronald and Debra Hinds, Linwood. Paternal grandparents are Bill and Kathleen Argersinger, Lawrence, and Cecil and Darlene Fewins, St. Joseph, Mich. James Balch, Baldwin, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Wichita State University this summer.

Sara Benson recently graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California and received degrees in political science and American studies. She was a member of the Political Science Honor Society and Pre-Law Honor Society. She accepted an internship at American University in Washington, D.C., with the American Prosecutors Research Institute for a semester in 2003. She assembled a resource database for current rape laws in the United States. She also coordinated a tutorial program for children at a homeless shelter in Los Angeles through School on Wheels. She is a 2000 graduate of Free State High School and the daughter of John and Nancy Benson, Lawrence.

Three Washburn University students from Lawrence recently pledged fraternities during the fall semester recruitment drive.

Carl Lisher pledged Phi Delta Theta. John Swinford pledged Sigma Phi Epsilon and Jonathan Weygint pledged Alpha Delta.

During recruitment days, they had the opportunity to tour the houses, meet current members and attend social events.

Zeta Tau Alpha announces that Jenna Collins, daughter of William and Annette Collins, Lawrence, has joined the chapter at Baker University in Baldwin. Zeta Tau Alpha is a women’s social fraternity that was founded in 1912.

Allison Greenfield, a Baldwin High School student, has been selected to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law. The forum will be Tuesday through Oct. 17 in Washington, D.C. Greenfield’s selection was based on academic achievement and an interest in the legal profession.

Frank Male, a Eudora High School senior, has been named a commended student in the 2005 National Merit Scholarship program. He was recognized for placing among the top 5 percent of more than 1 million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
