Geriatrician encourages new thinking on aging

A novel way of thinking about and assisting the elderly is necessary in today’s society, according to a physician and author who spoke Wednesday night at Kansas University’s Dole Institute of Politics.

Dr. William Thomas, who made waves with the recent book “What Are Old People For?” says baby boomers should embrace old age and not see it as a decline. In fact, he thinks the time has come for longevity to receive more attention than youth and vigor.

He decries the lack of alternatives to nursing homes and the institutionalization of the elderly. Moreover, he says society has developed a massive bureaucracy to serve the elderly without affection or tenderness.
