Berner solid so far

Lawrence’s Matt Berner wielded a hot bat during four Kansas University intrasquad baseball games last weekend at Hoglund Ballpark.

Berner, a red-shirt freshman infielder from Free State High, went 5-for-9 with a double and a home run. Another freshman, outfielder John Allman from St. Louis, also was impressive, going 4-for-8.

On the mound, sophomore Sean Land, who was clocked as high as 90 mph, pitched five innings during the weekend and allowed only one hit, while striking out three.

“Overall, I was very pleased with Sean’s outing,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “He has shown a lot of progress from last season to this fall. He showed good command of three pitches and was dominating.”

Freshman left-hander Logan Murphy threw seven innings and surrendered only five hits while recording eight strikeouts. Junior Kodiak Quick, a transfer from Stanford, threw a couple of innings, posting four strikeouts and no walks while yielding only one hit.

Among the veterans, senior catcher Sean Richardson collected three singles and a double in nine at-bats for a .444 average. Junior shortstop Ritchie Price posted a .375 batting average after singling twice and doubling. And senior infielder Travis Dunlap led the team with two doubles and posted a .364 average.

Fall baseball scrimmages will continue this weekend. The series will begin at 6 p.m. Friday for Parents Day. Intrasquad games also are on tap at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All are open to the public.
