Details sketchy on injury accident

A woman was injured and had to be taken to a hospital by helicopter early Sunday morning after a traffic accident at 19th and Louisiana streets.

No accident report was available from Lawrence Police on Sunday. A police supervisor who was not working at the time of the 1:30 a.m. accident said he thought there were two vehicles involved but only one injury.

No other details were available Sunday night.

Accidents injure 3 in Jefferson County

Oskaloosa — Two Saturday night injury traffic accidents are still under investigation by Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers.

A Valley Falls resident was taken by helicopter ambulance after a one-vehicle accident about 9 p.m. at 74th Street and Westlake Road, about 5 miles east of Meriden.

Earlier, at 7 p.m., two vehicles were involved in an accident on U.S. Highway 24 about 1.5 miles west of Midland Junction. Two people were taken to area hospitals but officers described the injuries as minor.

The names of the victims and other details were unavailable Sunday. The Kansas Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation of both accidents.

Black alumni group to hold fund-raiser

The Kansas University Black Alumni Assn. will have its Bruce-Smith Scholarship Reception this month to raise money for scholarships.

The reception will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Clarion Hotel Sports Complex — formerly the Adams Mark Hotel — in Kansas City, Mo. The scholarship fund is named for Blanche Ketene Bruce, KU’s first black graduate in 1885, and Lizzie Ann Smith, the first black student admitted to KU.

Charlie Nelms, vice president of institutional development and student affairs at Indiana University, will be the guest speaker.

Members of the association also will gather Saturday for a tailgate party and social reception surrounding KU’s Homecoming football game against Kansas State University.

Candidates invited to potluck dinner

Lawrence residents will have the opportunity to meet some of the candidates in the November election at a potluck dinner this week.

Thirteen candidates for state and local offices, including those for Douglas Country district attorney and the state Senate’s 2nd District, which represents Lawrence, have been invited to attend the dinner, sponsored by the Oread Neighborhood Assn.

The event will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass.

The event is free, but those who wish to attend are asked to bring a dish to share.
