Kempf, Veritas hold off Tyro

? Paul Kempf scored six touchdowns, including a critical one with 2:02 remaining, to lift Lawrence Veritas Christian to a 44-34 victory over Tyro Christian in eight-man football Friday night.

Playing on the artificial turf at Coffeyville Community College, Kempf caught four TD passes from quarterback Casey Woods and ran for scores of 12 and 66 yards.

The 66-yard gallop came less than a minute after Tyro Christian had scored and cut the Eagles’ lead to 36-34.

“I knew we’d have to play well, and I thought our guys showed a lot of heart,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said after his team boosted its record to 5-1.

Kempf, a senior halfback, carried 17 times for 168 yards, caught eight passes for 93 yards and also tossed a 47-yard pass to end Mark Randtke. He also caught two conversion passes from Woods.

Woods, whose TD passes to Kempf were for 11, 53, nine and 14 yards, completed 11 of 18 passes for 134 yards. Jesse Schultz, the Eagles’ other back, rushed 19 times for 141 yards and a couple of two-point conversions.

“It wasn’t our best-played game,” Bennett said, “but the guys stepped up at the end.”

Linebacker Andrew Bartlow, Kempf, Schultz and Randtke all were in double digits in tackles.

“We really gang-tackled well,” Bennett said. “Those four all had between 10 and 16 tackles.”

Veritas Christian’s next game will be Oct. 9 at Springfield (Mo.) Christian.
