Baker has Eagles right where it wants them for today’s game

? To say Baker University’s football squad has Avila on the schedule at the right place would not be an understatement.

The Wildcats (2-2) will play host to the Eagles (1-3) at 2 p.m. today at Liston Stadium, site of each of Baker’s victories.

Baker has defeated Evangel and Missouri Valley at Liston Stadium but has struggled on the road, losing at Central Methodist and MidAmerica Nazarene by a combined 91-34.

“We feel good about coming home,” first-year BU coach Mike Grossner said. “We’ve got to figure out how to win on the road, and we’ll cross that bridge in a couple weeks, but we’ve played well and been able to do some good things here. We should have a good crowd.”

A few sketchy quarters on defense and numerous turnovers were factors on the road, but the BU offense and defense both have been effective during home games.

Quarterback Brian Sheppard leads the Heart of America Athletic Conference in passing and total offense, while senior All-America running back John Reeves is averaging 81 yards per game on the ground while battling injuries. Also, receivers Ryan Pitts and Keenan Ganz are 1-2 in the league in receiving yards per game.

“Our kids have shown they’re resilient and they’re tough at home,” Grossner said. “But we have a tough opponent. The big difference in this challenge is that they run the option and run the clock down.”
