Jayhawks still leery of struggling Red Raiders

Texas Tech’s soccer team may be on a five-game slide, but Kansas University isn’t likely to overlook the Red Raiders.

“Tech was up 2-1 on Texas and lost in overtime,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “And Texas is a quality team.”

Oh, and there’s one other thing.

“Tech beat us last year,” Francis said.

The first kick is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Tech edged the Jayhawks, 3-2, last fall in Lubbock, Texas, but the Raiders (3-7) have struggled this year with their only wins coming against Oral Roberts, Portland State and Angelo State.

Kansas (9-2) is ranked in the second 10 in most soccer polls and is coming off a 2-1 victory over defending Big 12 Conference champ Colorado on Sunday. That win came two days after the Jayhawks had outshot Nebraska, yet bowed, 1-0.

“We hadn’t lost two in a row all season,” Francis said, “and we came out and played very well against Colorado, and that helped with our confidence.”

Defense has been the Jayhawks’ strong suit. Goalkeeper Meghan Miller leads the Big 12 in goals against average (0.36), save percentage (.922) and shutouts (7).

On offense, Rachel Gilfillan, Caroline Smith, Nicole Cauzillo and Holly Gault each have scored at least three goals. Kansas has outscored its opponents, 17-4. The Red Raiders feature freshman Priscilla Esquivel who has posted seven goals and 14 points so far.

Kansas will play its fourth straight league home game at 1 p.m. Sunday against Baylor. The battle against the Bears (4-4-1) will be the Jayhawks’ last home game until the regular season finale Oct. 29 against Iowa State.

“You don’t like to be on the road three weekends in a row,” Francis said, “but the Big 12 schedule is out of your control.”

The first of five consecutive KU road games will be a Oct. 8 at Missouri.
