KANSAS CITY, KAN. ? A man was convicted Wednesday evening of killing five people in a spree that began as retaliation for the robbery and beating of his mother.

A Wyandotte County jury convicted Darrell Lamont Stallings, 34, of five counts of capital murder and one count each of criminal discharge of a firearm, attempted first-degree murder and criminal possession of firearm in the June 2002 shooting rampage in Kansas City, Kan.

Another Kansas City, Kan., man, 28-year-old Errik Harris, faces the same charges, but his trial date has not been set.

Prosecutors charged that Stallings fatally shot Trina Jennings, 26, who was seven months pregnant, and wounded Anthony Jennings to avenge what he believed were their roles in the robbing and beating of Stallings’ mother two months earlier.

The other victims were Samantha Sigler, 24; Destiny Wiles, 23; Tameika Jackson, 24; and Melvin Montague, 34. Prosecutors said they were killed because they witnessed the shootings.

Testimony at trial included a recording of an interview Stallings gave from the Wyandotte County Jail to KCTV.

In the interview, Stallings, who was forcibly medicated to make him competent to stand trial, said he had snapped the morning of June 10, 2002. He said he did not set out to kill anyone and claimed he began shooting in self-defense and that some of his victims were struck in the melee.
