Men fourth at Regional

? Sophomore Benson Chesang placed sixth, helping Kansas University’s men’s cross country squad place fourth out of 21 teams Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The top two teams, Minnesota and Oklahoma State, automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. KU still can earn an at-large bid, however.

Chesang, the Big 12 Conference champion, finished in a time of 30:30.74 and earned a bid to the NCAAs.

Freshman Colby Wissell placed 17th in 31:03.92, junior Matt French was 26th and senior Chris Jones 36th.

The Jayhawk women placed 16th out of 26 teams. Senior Megan Manthe placed 61st in the 6-kilometer race in 22:14.75, and freshman Lisa Morrisey was 72nd in 22:25.94.

The NCAA track committee will select the field for the 13 at-large teams Monday. The championships are Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
