The Dole Institute of Politics is using Veterans Day to renew its call for photographs of Kansas veterans who served during World War II.

Bill Lacy, the Kansas University institute’s director, said staff members were continuing to collect photographs for a computer kiosk located in the institute’s main hall.

“It is very satisfying to see how many people make a point to look for loved ones’ photos,” Lacy said. “There have been many touching scenes when families of these men and women recall memories or share them with children who never had an opportunity to meet them.”

The kiosk was the outgrowth of the Memory Wall found on the south wall of the institute. The wall initially was to house about 450 photos, but the size was doubled when the institute was flooded with submissions about the time of the July 2003 building dedication.

More than 1,700 photos of Kansas World War II veterans were submitted by the dedication date. Now, about 2,500 photos and names are stored in the computer kiosk.

Photos, along with hometown, service branch and whether the veteran attended KU, can be sent to the institute at 2350 Petefish Drive, Lawrence 66045. They can be black and white or color, and any size.
