Broncos alter defensive staff

The Denver Broncos fired David Gibbs as defensive-backs coach Wednesday and replaced him with assistant Jimmy Spencer, a former Broncos safety.

Kirk Doll, an assistant defensive and special-teams coach, will help Spencer coach defensive backs.

Gibbs was the defensive-secondary coach at Kansas University under Glen Mason in 1995 and 1996. He followed Mason to Minnesota and spent four years as the Gophers’ defensive coordinator/secondary coach.

No reasons were immediately given for Gibbs’ departure. He is the son of Alex Gibbs, the former longtime offensive line coach for the Broncos.

Spencer began his coaching career as a player-coach in 2003, but retired as a player before this season.

The Broncos (6-3) have only three interceptions this year, two by Champ Bailey and one by Kelly Herndon.
