You can make a case that Pixar Animation Studios is the most consistent entity in the film industry, creating a body of work to rival Disney’s run during the 1930s and ’40s. “The Incredibles” is no exception, joining past Pixar successes such as “Finding Nemo” and “Toy Story,” with a saga about a retired costumed crimefighter who is called back into service to engage a foe from his past … only this time the wife and kids tag along. “The Incredibles” is less a parody of superheroes than it is a genuinely rousing comic book tale with a twist.

Also opening in theaters is the romantic comedy “Alfie.” Jude Law reprises Michael Caine’s original role as a British “heat-seeking bachelor,” now on the prowl in New York.

And finally there is “A Dirty Shame,” which finds filmmaker John Waters attempting to regain the edgy bad taste of his “Pink Flamingos”-era material with a tale attacking sexual puritanism. Tracey Ullman stars as a repressed, right-wing housewife who turns into a nymphomaniac following a head injury.

If only life were like the movies.
