Police arrest 19-year-old on rape, drug charges

Police have arrested a 19-year-old Lawrence man suspected of raping a Lawrence woman after giving her a ride home from a campus-area bar.

The woman reported Monday that the man raped her about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 23 in his vehicle after he gave her a ride from The Hawk, 1340 Ohio. Police served a search warrant Wednesday at the man’s home and arrested him on suspicion of rape and on drug charges including possession with intent to sell a controlled substance.

The man was in the Douglas County Jail on Thursday evening with bond set at $80,000.

KU to announce results of ‘family campaign’

The Kansas University Endowment Association on Saturday will announce the total amount raised through its University Family Campaign, part of the KU First: Invest in Excellence capital campaign.

The University Family Campaign includes gifts made by faculty, staff, retired employees and students. To date, 3,205 — or 27 percent — of faculty members, staff and retirees from KU’s four campuses have participated.

The total will be announced at the end of the first quarter of the KU-Colorado football game at Memorial Stadium.

Those who will participate in the announcement will include Chancellor Robert Hemenway; Forrest Hoglund, chairman of the KU First campaign; John Ferraro, professor and chair of hearing and speech at the KU Medical Center; and Jerry Bailey, director and associate professor of teaching and leadership.

Bondsman gets more time to find suspect

A bail bondsman on Thursday told a Douglas County judge he had out-of-state bounty hunters looking for a businessman charged with scamming investors in a Lawrence brewery during the mid-1990s.

Allen J. Salah failed to show for a court appearance Sept. 30 to answer to securities-fraud charges in connection with the defunct Sports Page Brewery. At the time, he told his defense attorney his parents had been seriously injured in an auto accident in Canada.

But a month later, Salah hasn’t been found.

Steve Robson, the bondsman who posted $20,000 to get Salah out of jail, on Thursday asked Judge Michael Malone for 30 more days to find Salah before having to forfeit the bond.

“He’s been a little tougher than most,” said Robson, of Arrow Bonding Co.

Malone granted Robson’s request.

Salah had been wanted in Douglas County for five years when he was arrested June 29 in a routine traffic stop in Illinois. He was brought back to Douglas County but made bond Aug. 12.

KU, Haskell conference focuses on community

Kansas University and Haskell Indian Nations University are teaming to present a two-day conference, “Shifting Borders,” focusing on community-building with African-Americans and American Indians.

A free workshop will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Haskell’s Navarre Hall. Cynthia Chavez, associate curator of the National Museum of the American Indian, will take part in a panel discussion from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A grant from the Ford Foundation helped pay for the conference.
