Voters approve Perry-Lecompton bond issue

Here’s what happened election night in area counties:

Jefferson County

Voters in the Perry-Lecompton school district, by about a 30 percent margin, approved a $9.9 million school bond issue to build a new middle school and two new gyms.

In Valley Falls, voters approved Sunday liquor sales by a 59-41 percent margin.

In other Jefferson County races:

  • Commission, 2nd District

Republican David Christy — 1,664, 58 percent

Democrat Kevin Kuenzi — 1,227, 42 percent

  • Commission, 3rd District

Democrat Francis A. Grollmes, incumbent — 1,296, 50 percent.

Republican LaVerne W. Clark — 1,275, 50 percent

Franklin County

Ottawa school officials promoted a bond proposal worth $25.9 million for a variety of improvements including a new school in northern Ottawa, remodeling Garfield Elementary School, demolishing Lincoln Elementary School, and expanding the high school. Voters passed the bond issue with 55 percent voting “yes.” In total, 3,201 people voted in favor of the bond issue, while 2,735 — or 45 percent — voted against it.

Voters also approved establishing a county administrator with 5,470 — or 54 percent — voting in favor of the position and 4,983 — or 46 percent — voting no.

Voters in Richmond by a wide margin approved a quarter-cent sales tax increase.

Republican John E. Taylor, incumbent — 1,477, 61 percent

Democrat John C. Riddle — 945, 39 percent

  • Commission, 3rd District

Republican Roy C. Dunn — 1,438, 65 percent

Democrat Douglas W. Morgan — 778, 35 percent

  • Clerk

Republican Shari Perry, incumbent — 7,113, 70 percent

Democrat Donna Ferguson — 3,094, 30 percent

Leavenworth County

Voters in the Tonganoxie school district considered a $25.3 million bond issue to build a new middle school and make other improvements. With five of eight precincts reporting at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, 1,838 voted in favor of the bond issue; 1,207 voted against it.

Republican Clyde D. Graeber — 4,608, 63 percent

Democrat Mike “Whiz” Scanlon — 2,679, 34 percent

  • Commission, 3rd District (8 of 10 precincts reporting)

Republican Dean Oroke — 3,340, 51 percent

Democrat Jerry Willburn — 3,215, 49 percent
