A new source for news, sports, business and other community information is hitting the streets Thursday in Lansing.

The Lansing Current is the newest member of a group of community newspapers in northeast Kansas published by Media West Communications, a division of The World Company in Lawrence.

The Current, a weekly, will be delivered for free on Thursdays to more than 2,900 homes in the community of 10,000 people and 130 businesses in Leavenworth County, Editor John Taylor said.

The newspaper also will provide information and breaking news through its online site, www.lansing current.com. The site also launches Thursday.

“We are going to give readers a comprehensive view of the community,” said Taylor, former news editor for the Lawrence Journal-World. “We saw this as a need for a growing area — the K-7 corridor — and we thought we’d fill the news void that the folks in Lansing have had.”

Taylor leads a six-member staff that will provide coverage of schools, sports, social events and other aspects of life in Lansing. Gene Young, a Lansing native, will write a column on Lansing history.

“We’ve been very well received in the community,” Taylor said.

Other members of Media West Communications are the Tonganoxie Mirror, the Basehor Sentinel, the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Chieftain, the Shawnee Dispatch, the De Soto Explorer, the Eudora News and the Baldwin City Signal.

The World Company publishes the Journal-World in Lawrence and operates Sunflower Broadband in Lawrence, Piper, Basehor, Tonganoxie, Linwood, Eudora, and other parts of Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties.
