Eagles fail in extra period of ‘defensive struggle’

? Clark Adams scored on a one-yard run in overtime, and Humboldt defeated Wellsville, 20-14, in a Class 3A football playoff game Tuesday night.

Wellsville took a 14-6 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Cody Gardner to Dan Erlacher. But Humboldt tied it at 14 on a three-yard run by Adams and conversion run by Doug Onnen.

The Eagles were unable to score in overtime, setting up Adams’ game-winning touchdown.

“We didn’t get the job done like we wanted to in the overtime,” Wellsville coach Bill Oshel said. “We held them for a couple downs, and they scored on fourth down. It was kind of a defensive struggle.”

Wellsville finished 4-6.

“We played a real good game,” Oshel said. “I’m very pleased with the way the kids played. They really performed well. I was really proud of the kids.”

Wellsville opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 2-yard run by Kelsey Currin, and a pass from Gardner to Erlacher added the extra points. A 40-yard run by Onnen brought Humboldt within 8-6 in the second quarter.
