Pakistani to deliver series’ inaugural speech

Safida Ayub, a public education official from northern Pakistan, will deliver Kansas University’s Office of International Programs’ inaugural Visiting International Scholar Lecture, “Education is Everything: A Woman’s Journey in Pakistan,” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kansas Room at the Kansas Union.

An acquaintance of Lawrence banker Wint Winter Jr., Ayub arrived in Lawrence in early September. She has spent the past two months studying teacher training programs at KU. She will return to Pakistan in late November.

Ayub and Winter met several years ago when Winter and his father toured Ayub’s school while on a hiking trip in the Himalayas.

Coaches, players team for Bert Nash

The third annual benefit for Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center will feature former Kansas University men’s basketball coach Ted Owens.

“An Evening with Ted Owens and Friends” will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Drive.

In addition to Owens, other speakers will be KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self, former Missouri men’s basketball coach Norm Stewart, former KU football coach Don Fambrough, and former basketball players Jo Jo White, Bud Stallworth, Roger Morningstar and many more. Tom Hedrick will be the master of ceremonies.

Tickets for the event are $125 per person. It includes a social hour with an open bar, dinner and program. Tickets can be ordered by calling Marilyn Sell at Bert Nash, 830-1795.

All proceeds from the benefit will go to the Bert Nash Endowment Trust Fund.
