Flea market space still available

Spaces are still available for the flea market scheduled for three dates this summer by Independence, Inc.

The market will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3 and Aug. 7 at 2001 Haskell Ave. Rain dates are the following Saturdays.

Spaces are $20 per session or $50 for all three sessions for 12-feet by 12-feet space.

Proceeds will benefit Independence Inc., an independent living resource center.

Topeka unit to leave Tuesday for Kosovo

The Topeka-based 35th Military Police Company of the Kansas Army National Guard will begin preparations for a deployment to Kosovo.

About 70 soldiers will participate in the mission, which aims to provide force protection.

On Tuesday, the soldiers will depart for Camp Atterbury, Ind., where they will train for their Kosovo duties.

The soldiers will staff the headquarters for the National Guards from Indiana and Ohio, who will be attached to the 35th Company for the one-year deployment.

Lawrence resident to join FHSU board of trustees

Lawrence resident Nelson Krueger has been named to the Fort Hays State University Endowment Assn. board of trustees.

Krueger is founder, president and CEO of Leading Edge Ltd., and is an airline transport pilot and certified flight instructor.

He graduated from FHSU in 1972 with a master’s degree in business administration. His wife, Judith, also attended FHSU.

Krueger previously served on the university’s Alumni Board of Directors from 1978 to 1981.

Conference at KU to celebrate ‘Ulysses’

A weeklong celebration of Irish culture for the 100th anniversary of James Joyce’s novel “Ulysses” is scheduled June 10-17 at Kansas University.

“Joyce’s Ireland: A Celebration of the Bloomsday Centenary” will be sponsored by the Hall Center for the Humanities, Lawrence Public Library and the Kansas Humanities Council.

Events scheduled include a lecture by Kathryn Conrad, associate professor of English; a performance of “Tristan and Isolde” by Priscilla Howe; a miniconference on Joyce’s Ireland; and a staged reading of Don Nigro’s play “Lucia Mad,” at 2:30 p.m. June 13, at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

The event will culminate in a marathon reading of “Ulysses” at various downtown locations. For more information about participating in the reading, e-mail Joycesireland@hotmail.com.
