First Christian Church

First Christian Church, 1000 Ky., will celebrate the Fifth Sunday with one combined worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday. At 10:10 a.m., there will be Sunday school.

Vacation Bible school will be from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. July 19-23. This year’s program is “SonGames 2004,” a week of sporting-good fun for children ages 4-11.

There will be a vacation Bible school preview event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 10 at the church, featuring games and crafts.

First Church of the Nazarene

Children ages 4-12 are invited to attend vacation Bible school from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 14-18 at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road.

A bond investment seminar is scheduled at 7 p.m. June 3 at the church.

First Church of the Nazarene is being featured at Signs of Life, a Christian bookstore at 722 Mass., until June 5.

First United Methodist Church

Seventeen youth will be confirmed as members of the congregation during the 9:40 a.m. Sunday worship service at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

The youth band will lead the music during this day of celebration.

Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center

“SonGames 2004” is the theme of vacation Bible school this year at Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center, 2104 Iowa.

Children from nursery age through fifth grade are invited to participate. An adult Bible study also is scheduled.

Hours are: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 6; 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 7-9.

Immanuel Fellowship of Lutheran Youth will serve lunch June 8 at the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, 1000 Ky.

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will have a “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle Sale” from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 11 and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 12.

It will be in the parish house behind the church parking lot.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

There will be a special observance of Memorial Day during both Sunday worship services at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway.

Members will also hear an update on current missions projects.

Doughnuts, coffee and juice will be offered between the 8:30 a.m. traditional service and the 10:45 a.m. contemporary service.

Moms in Touch International

Moms in Touch International will have a roundup from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

The organization brings mothers and grandmothers together to pray for kids.

There will be a family Sunday, in which children will remain in worship with their families, this weekend at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The service will be at 9:30 a.m. The nursery will be open.

St. John’s United Church of Christ

St. John’s United Church of Christ, 396 E. 900 Road, Baldwin, will have a Memorial Day service at noon Sunday after the church worship service in the church cemetery.

The memorial service will celebrate the lives of the church members who died during the past year.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt will lead worship at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Sunday’s theme is “If He had to do it over …” Baptisms for children and adults will be celebrated.

The summer schedule begins this week, with special small groups, a Bible study Thursday, a Men’s Bible study Saturday and four services Sunday.

The “Time to Grow” campaign continues, as members of the church make their pledges to fulfill God’s vision for the congregation.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will celebrate Pentecost Sunday with several parishioners reading the Gospel in many languages, including Chinese, Norwegian, Swedish, French, Spanish and Swahili.

During the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, the parish will recognize those who have given their time and talents to teach children and adults throughout the year. All teachers will be honored and presented small tokens of appreciation.

After the service, the congregation will gather outside the church to release thousands of ladybugs.

The celebration continues as parishioners gather in the parish hall for the annual “Fruits of the Spirit” ice cream sundaes, where participants will choose their favorite “spirit toppings”: raspberries for gentleness, bananas for joy, peaches for love, cherries for self-control, pineapple for patience, blueberries for kindness, strawberries for faithfulness, along with chocolate for generosity and caramel for peace.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Youth at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., will participate in an overnight stay Friday at the Hollis Renewal Center near Bonner Springs.

The group will spend the evening playing games and cooking out.

The following morning, the youth will be involved in working on service projects around the center. Adam Boxberger and D.J. Whetter, youth ministers, are coordinating the retreat.

Members of the church’s vacation Bible school planning team will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday to start work on the church’s summer vacation Bible school, planned for July 19-23.

The newly formed Global Concerns Committee meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the church conference room.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

The Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road, will have a spiritual celebration, “Ceremony Sunday,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The fellowship’s annual potluck picnic will start at 11:30 a.m.

The Rev. Darlene Strickland has accepted the call to be the new minister at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane.

She will begin her duties Aug. 1.

Unity will have a potluck picnic after the worship service at 11 a.m. June 6 in Centennial Park.

Walt Larson will conduct a writer’s/storyteller’s workshop, “Embarking on the Journey,” at 7 p.m. June 8. He will discuss the intricacies and nuances of story telling.

University Community of Christ

The Zahniser family is hosting an overnight camp-out for the youth group from 5:30 p.m. today to noon Sunday on their farm in Lecompton.

Campers are invited to bring their camping gear, games and bug spray. A special camp-side worship service is planned for Sunday morning. Parents are welcome to stay with their children.

Alice Norris will lead discussions in the “Power & Light” study group at 9 a.m. Sunday at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive. The group is studying Paul’s letters to the Corinthians.

There will be a 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at University Community of Christ.

Vinland United Methodist Church

Vinland United Methodist Church, 1724 N. 692 Road, will have a musical event, “Music on the Lawn,” at 5 p.m. June 12.

The event will feature the Rhythm Band and other area musicians.

Participants are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food, beverages and table service will be provided.

West Side Presbyterian Church

Worshippers are encouraged to wear something red to the 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, to help celebrate Pentecost.

The church office will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Men’s lunch will be at noon Thursday at Plum Tree Restaurant, 2620 Iowa.

Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated June 6, when the Rev. Bill Stype will fill the pulpit.
