Lawrence’s Catholic community is going to experience major changes in priestly leadership in the coming months:

• The Rev. Charles Polifka, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., will leave in July and move to St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria.

He will be pastor of St. Fidelis Parish (Cathedral of the Plains) in Victoria, St. Boniface Parish in Vincent, St. Ann’s Parish in Walker and administrator of the Holy Cross Shrine in Pfeifer.

He will also be the guardian of the friary and the director of the Capuchin Center for Spiritual Life.

• The Rev. John Schmeidler, associate director of St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center, 1631 Crescent Road, will replace Polifka at St. John.

Polifka’s and Schmeidler’s assignments were made by the Denver-based Capuchin Province of Mid-America. Both priests are Franciscan Capuchin friars.

• The Rev. James Shaughnessy, pastor of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St., will leave in July to become pastor of Annunciation Parish in Frankfort and St. Monica/St. Elizabeth parishes in Blue Rapids.

He will be replaced by the Rev. Michael Mulvany, current pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Osage City, St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Lapeer and St. Patrick Parish in Scranton.

• The Rev. Vince Krische, director of St. Lawrence, will begin a six-month sabbatical in June. He will be in Colorado for the summer, where he will work on a history of St. Lawrence.

In September, he will travel to Rome to take part in a continuing-education program for priests at the North American College.

He will return to his duties at St. Lawrence in early January 2005.

The Rev. Brian Scheiber, director of vocations for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, will do pastoral ministry at St. Lawrence in Krische’s absence.

The Rev. Raymond Burger, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora, is retiring.

The Rev. John Ayang will be administrator of Holy Family Parish. He will continue to serve as pastor of St. Lawrence Parish in Easton and St. Joseph of the Valley Parish in Leavenworth.

The Rev. Thomas Hesse will be sacramental minister of Holy Family.
