The Lawrence 299er's Duplicate Bridge Club met May 19. Eight pairs of competitors participated in a stratified game that used a Howell movement.

The game was ranked as a club championship event. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Eldon Herd and Jo Andersen claimed first place in A. Emily Foster and Al Ballard placed second in A and first in B. Don Brennaman and Betty Spalsbury tied for third place in A with John Gilbert and Judy Bevan. Gilbert and Bevan placed second in B.

The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met May 21. Six and a half tables played a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement.

The game was ranked as a club championship event. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Playing North-South, Chris Lane and Shirley Reese finished first in A. Shirlie Vaughn and Virginia Eddy placed second in A. Olivier Urruty and Dan Osman were third in A and first in B.

Sitting East-West, Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro finished first in A. Betty Collier and Carol Ball placed second in A and first in B.

Heitzman and Piro placed first overall in the event in A. Lane and Reese placed second overall in A. Collier and Ball were third overall in A and first in B. Vaughn and Eddy finished fourth overall in A. Urruty and Osman were fifth overall in A and second in B.

The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Nine tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement.

Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Playing the North-South cards, Lois Jones and Jeff Nash took first place in A. Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle finished second. Lois Clark and Harry Shaffer placed third. Chris Lane and Shirley Reese were fourth in A and first in B. Clyde Romer and Steve Phelps were second in B.

Competing East-West, Jim Kelley and John Hickey were first in A. Olivier Urruty and Don Brennaman finished second in A and first in B and C. Alice Leitch and Frances Vogel were fourth in A and second in B.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Lawrence Post 852 announces that past commander Vern Russell has been appointed to the VFW National headquarter's Chief of Staff Council.

As chief of staff, Russell will assist the VFW Department of Kansas commander with recruiting new VFW members and assisting veterans with health-care issues.
