Bryan and Cheryl Rice, Baldwin, announce the birth of a daughter, Tricia Ann Rice, born May 19, 2004, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Grandparents are Fred and Sue Rice, Leland and Pat Bailey, and Kenneth Powers.

Justin and Chrissy Mayer, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Mackenzie Sue Mayer, born May 11, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Steve and Angie McClure, Lecompton. Paternal grandparents are David and Regina Mayer, Wetmore. Great-grandparents are Helen Miller, Topeka; Sally Glover, Lawrence; and Raymond Levick, Sabetha.

David Vermooten and Jocilyn Oyler Vermooten, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Isabella Corinne Oyler Vermooten, born April 18, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Robert F. and Caryn Oyler, Lawrence; Julie Lonsinger, Lawrence, and Ric Lonsinger, Kansas City. Paternal grandparents are Bill and Ginger Vermooten, Lawrence. Great-grandmother is Harriet Smith, Lawrence.

Graduates of Eudora High School are invited to the Eudora High School Alumni Assn.’s banquet and yearly meeting June 6 in the Eudora Middle School commons area, 2635 Church St.

Registration begins at noon. The covered-dish dinner will start at 12:30 p.m., followed by the business meeting.

The banquet is open to all Eudora High School graduates. Special recognition will be given to the class of 1954, which will celebrate its 50th reunion.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring their own table service. Coffee and tea will be provided.

The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is funding 13 $1,000 scholarships that are renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a B average in the field of health care. The 2004 recipients are Molly Flavin, Free State High School; Srivalli Telikepalli, Lawrence High School; and Cy Kueffer, Baldwin High School.

Lindsey Smith graduated from Kansas University on Sunday with a degree in communications studies. She is the daughter of Michael and Marcia Smith, Lawrence.

Cadet Douglas D. Snodgrass, son of Cindy and Col. David Snodgrass of Fort Richardson, Alaska, was named to the dean’s list at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Snodgrass is a 2003 graduate of Bartlett High School. Col. Snodgrass is a former Lawrence resident and is serving in Iraq. Cadet Snodgrass is the grandson of Bruce and Joan Snodgrass, Lawrence.

Jacob Albers graduated from Kansas University with a degree in mechanical engineering this spring. He will receive his degree in business administration this fall. He is on the honor roll.

Jacob has received the following honors and awards while attending KU: Honor and Distinction for Outstanding Scholarship, Leadership and Service from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars; Honor and Distinguished Ability and Achievement in Scholarship, Leadership and Service from the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society; recognition of Outstanding Scholastic Achievement and Excellence from the Golden Key International Honor Society; elected to the Pi Tau Sigma Honor Society, Kansas Psi Chapter of the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society-KU; scholarship achievement award, National Greek Academic Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Alpha; Order of Omega for outstanding contributions from Pi Kappa Phi; graduate of the Delta Mu Class of the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute from The North-American Interfraternity Conference; Outstanding Fraternity Leader 2002, Outstanding IFC Leader 2003, Outstanding Greek senior award 2003-04, from the University Greek community and IFC; Certificate of Appreciation and Outstanding Service from the KU Memorial Corp.; lifelong member of the “Jack M. Jasper Leadership Society,” for demonstration of leadership and outstanding academic achievement from the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity; and an award finalist of the Ex.C.E.L. Award.

Jacob served as president of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity for two years. He was one of the founding fathers for Pi Kappa Phi-KU chapter. Jacob was accepted as one of the riders to bicycle across the United States this summer for the Journey of Hope team of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity Push America foundation. The trek will start in San Francisco and end in Washington, D.C.

Washburn University graduate Jordinn Nelson, Lawrence, was one of the first 12 students recognized for completing the requirements and earning a leadership certificate from the Washburn Institute for the Study and Practice of Leadership.

Leadership certificate recipients have demonstrated the ability to think critically and analytically about the essence of leadership, have mastered the communication skills necessary to lead effectively, have experience in converting leadership theory into action and are familiar with the philosophical, social and psychological components of leadership. Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2003.

Joshua Goeke, Lawrence, and Julie Hayden, Tecumseh, made the dean’s list during the spring semester at Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Friends University announced area students who were candidates for 2004 graduation. They are Christine Elliott, Lisa Peterson, Bradley Walker, Amy Palmer, Nicole Barkhurst, Rhett Dubiel, Nathanael Millhouse, Lori Myrick, Kleytter Bolivar and Mary Ann Hawkins, Lawrence; Tish Brooks, Debra Kuck and DeAnn Coffman Schuetz, Tecumseh; Jenna Henderson, Overbrook; and Lori June, Basehor.

Andrew Huffman, a Free State High School graduate, has received a Trustees’ Award scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design.

The merit scholarship was given as a result of an art portfolio competition at the college. He is the son of Dan and Susie Huffman, Lawrence, and was an art student of Carolyn Berry. He plans to major in fine arts this fall at the college.

Stephen Charles Ramsdell, Lawrence, has received a Faculty Scholarship at Cedarville University, Cedarville, Ohio. Cedarville University gives Faculty Scholarships to first-year students who have high ACT or SAT scores and a cumulative high school grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. This renewable scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $2,200.

Ramsdell plans to major in exercise science. He is the son of Robert and Leslie Ramsdell, Lawrence.

Several 2004 Lawrence high school graduates have received scholarships to Fort Hays State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. They are Christina Gordzica, daughter of Patti Hadl and Alex Gordzica; Taj Heckler, son of Richard and Beth Anne Heckler; Rhiana Huff, daughter of Beth Huff; Julia Lee, daughter of Leslie Carson; Patrick Lyon, son of Paul and Patti Lyon; Anna Robertson, daughter of Robin and Russ Robertson; and Matthew Somers, son of Curtis and Adrianne Somers.

Dana-Mae Robbs, Lecompton, made the dean’s honor roll during the spring 2004 semester at Independence Community College by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Lindsay Michelle Shields, Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Arts degree May 15 at Brevard College, Brevard, N.C. Shields, the daughter of Dr. Michael and Kristie Shields, earned degrees in English and interdisciplinary studies, and wilderness leadership and experiential education with summa cum laude honors.

During the commencement ceremony, Shields received the C. Edward and Brona N. Roy Good Citizenship Award. The award is presented annually, based on a vote of the faculty, to the graduate who best exhibits a record of moral character, citizenship, leadership and a positive influence on campus.

In addition to a plaque, Shields received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. Shields also was among 13 students who were recognized for graduating with a cumulative grade-point average that exceeded 3.9. She also made the spring semester dean’s list.

Pittsburg State University announced its 2004 spring graduates. Commencement ceremonies were May 14-15.
