Holiday closings announced

Government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the general services administration and the federal courts.

City offices in most area towns and counties also will be closed.

Most banks, except Sunflower Bank, 1201 Wakarusa Drive, will be closed.

Lawrence Bus Co. buses will not run, and MV Transportation buses will not operate Monday. Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free on Monday.

Kansas University offices will be closed. The Dole Institute of Politics will remain open.

No city yard waste pickups are scheduled Monday. City residents are asked to put yard waste out with their normal weekly trash pickup. No other changes are planned in sanitation route schedules.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open for lap swimming from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. The waterslide and diving area will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the zero-depth and children’s area will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open for tee times. All other Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed.

American Legion Post No. 14 of Lawrence will stage a ceremony at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign Wars plans a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Lawrence Memorial Park.

Clinton Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day service at 11:30 a.m. Monday. The address will be given by Rev. Mike Birney of Clinton Presbyterian Church.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday.

There will be no mail delivery Monday. UPS and FedEx deliveries also will not be made.

Home delivery and Bus 62 senior service meals will be canceled Monday. All activities at the Lawrence Senior Center, including clubs, classes and the noon meal, will be canceled. Meals also will not be served at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin senior centers.

The business office of the Journal-World will be open for walk-ins and phone inquiries from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, with normal hours from 5:30 a.m. to noon Sunday.

USA Today will be delivered.

Most liquor stores will be open, but may close early.
