Ruth V. ‘Betty’ Chaney

Memorial services for Ruth V. “Betty” Chaney, 84, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Lawrence. Private burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.

Mrs. Chaney died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 15, 1919, in Cherryvale, the daughter of Robert J. and Ruth Toy Huddleson.

Mrs. Chaney graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville and attended Coffeyville Junior College.

She was active in youth ministry at the First Christian Church, where she was a member for more than 50 years. She was president of the Lawrence Country Club women’s group and a member of the Ladies 9-Hole and Orchards Ladies golf groups. Mrs. Chaney also served as a Brownie leader, a den mother and president of Delta Gammas’ Mothers Club.

Mrs. Chaney also was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and Beta Mu.

She married John R. Chaney, Sr., on June 29, 1939, in Coffeyville. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, John R. Chaney Jr., Lawrence; three daughters, Marcia Kerr, Lawrence, Carol Dema, Great Bend, and Patty Harwood, Dallas; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The casket will be closed.

Family will receive friends after the memorial service.
