Red Sox sign Ortiz to two-year extension

Boston — The Boston Red Sox signed first baseman-designated hitter David Ortiz to a $12.5 million, two-year contract extension Friday that includes a club option for a third season.

The deal could keep Ortiz with Boston through 2007. It also reduces the large contingent of Red Sox players eligible for free agency after the season, a list headed by Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra.

Ortiz was hitting .261 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 31 RBIs going into Friday night’s game against Toronto.

Ortiz said he wanted to focus on playing rather than contract negotiations.

“I just told my agent that I don’t want to be into it at all,” he said. “I just want to be playing ball. All I’m worried about right now is winning some games.”

Last year, Ortiz hit .288 with 39 doubles, 31 home runs and 101 RBIs.

Third baseman Glaus has shoulder surgery

Anaheim, Calif. — Angels slugger Troy Glaus had surgery on his right shoulder Friday, an operation that might sideline him for the rest of the season. Glaus’ arm will be in a sling for the next 10 to 14 days before he’s examined by team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed the operation.

The three-time All-Star third baseman and 2002 World Series MVP is scheduled to begin physical therapy after that. Anaheim said no timetable had been set for his return.

Brewers shelve Helms

Milwaukee — Brewers third baseman Wes Helms was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday after he strained his right knee in a fall at the ballpark in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Helms slipped on a wet ramp outside the clubhouse Wednesday. He will have surgery Monday. Helms was batting .252.
