Anne Elizabeth Hemphill

? Memorial services for Anne Elizabeth Hemphill, 93, Baldwin, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Vinland United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Stony Point Cemetery in Vinland.

Mrs. Hemphill died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at her home on Bittersweet Farm near Baldwin.

She was born May 20, 1911, near Baldwin, the daughter of George Edwards and Kate Sophia Soule Kelley.

Mrs. Hemphill graduated from Vinland High School in 1929 and later from Baker University.

She was a homemaker and a published author of local and family history.

Mrs. Hemphill was a lifelong member of the Vinland United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society of south Douglas County.

She married Herschel Hemphill on June 23, 1940, in Baldwin. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, James Walter Hemphill, Tucson, Ariz., and Howard Herschel Hemphill, Vinland; a daughter, Rebecca Anne Browning, Lawrence; two sisters, Katharine Kelley and Martha Smith, both of Baldwin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.
