Students win prizes at Project Graduation

Several graduating seniors from Lawrence’s two high schools won major prizes at Project Graduation, the annual after-graduation bash that ran from 10 p.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday.

In all, about $15,000 in prizes was donated to the event, which took place at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St.

Randomly selected winners of the top prizes were:

  • Ivan Sheu, Free State High School, 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier donated by Ottawa GMC.
  • Jennifer Narcomey, Lawrence High School, WaveRunner donated by Scott and Linda Robinson.
  • Erin Niedenthal, LHS, $500 Journal-World scholarship.
  • Brady Hall, FSHS, $500 DCCCA scholarship.
  • Josh Cosgrove, FSHS, and Daniel Gleasure, LHS, $250 Chavez family scholarships.
  • Oliver Devlin, FSHS, McDonald’s scholarship.

Group seeks black history memorabilia

Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. is seeking assistance in gathering a collection of pictures, stories and memorabilia concerning black history.

HCCI is a nonprofit agency that provides education and counseling on credit, debt repayment, budgeting, housing issues and homeownership opportunities, and it has offices in Topeka, Manhattan, Lawrence and Emporia.

HCCI operates out of the Buchanan Center in Topeka, previously the Buchanan School, one of the all-black schools when the Brown v. Board of Education decision was made.

Send any pictures, stories or memorabilia to 1195 S.W. Buchanan, Topeka 66604. Those interested in viewing the beginning of the collection on display can visit the center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

KU sets final exam

Kansas University has announced the following final examination:

Chairman selected for design department

The Kansas University Department of Design has a new leader.

Gregory Thomas will begin his appointment as chairman in July. He currently is an instructor at the University of Southern California and owner of Gregory Thomas Associates, a design firm that focuses on brand strategy, corporate communication, multimedia issues and packaging.

Thomas, a native of Wichita, also has taught at the California Institute of the Arts, in Valencia, and the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, Calif. His 25-year-old company includes such clients as CBS, IBM, USC and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

He will replace Tom Beisecker, who served as interim chairman for two years. Beisecker will return to full-time teaching.

History professor visits ‘River City Weekly’

Jonathan Earle, Kansas University assistant professor of history, discusses the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and its impact on events in Lawrence and the nation leading up to the Civil War beginning tonight on “River City Weekly.”

Then prenatal massage is the subject on “Better Health” from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“River City Weekly,” with host Greg Hurd, premieres on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays with replays at 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Mondays, and 10 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
