More storms could move through by evening

A storm brewing out in central Kansas could bring severe weather to the Lawrence area late this afternoon or early evening.

“We’re watching out west along I-70,” said Matt Sayer, 6News meteorologist. “There’s a chance thunderstorms may develop — a 30 percent chance for us.”

Occasional thundershowers have been passing through the Lawrence area today.

One thunderstorm cell that entered Douglas County about 11:30 a.m. from the southwest prompted the National Weather Service to issue a warning about the possibility of it producing penny-sized hail.

That cell produced hail in Waubunsee County, but there were no reports about it bringing hail to the Lawrence area, Sayers said.

However, the city did get varying amounts of rain today. The Lawrence Municipal Airport northeast of Lawrence reported 0.74 of an inch by mid afternoon. Audrey Kamb-Studdard, who is one of the 6News Skyhawk volunteer weather observers, reported 1.3 inches as of 1 p.m. today in southwest Lawrence near the YSI Sports Complex.

“For tonight, it’s dependent upon what we see this afternoon,” Sayers said. “If we don’t see anything this afternoon, we could see some showers in the morning as the front moves northward, clearing out by 9 to 10.”

The overnight low will drop to 65 by early Wednesday morning.

“Tomorrow afternoon, it will be partly cloudy and down right muggy, with 87 for the high and a lot of high humidity,” Sayers said. “The heat index will be in the lower 90s tomorrow.”

Wednesday night will remain mild and dry, dropping down to a low of 69 by early Thursday morning.

Thursday will see mostly sunny skies, turning partly cloudy in the afternoon, with a chance for storms. The high will be 91, Sayers said.

Friday morning will start with a low of 70, with partly cloudy skies and 87 for the afternoon high temperature.

Saturday’s weather forecast calls for it to be mild and partly cloudy, with a high of 89.

“Sunday, we’re looking at a high of 86, with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon,” Sayers said.
