Second-oldest person in world dies at 114

Charlotte Benkner, recognized as the world’s second-oldest person, died Friday, a funeral home in Youngstown said. She was 114.

The Guinness Book of Records initially recognized Benkner as the world’s oldest person upon the death Nov. 13 of Mitoyo Kawate of Japan, at 114.

Guinness then gave that distinction to Ramona Trinidad Iglesias Jordan on April 22, after a baptismal certificate showed she was born on Aug. 31, 1889. Benkner was born Nov. 16, 1889.

Customers not biting on $1,000 omelet

Culinary craziness has reached new heights in New York with the debut of the $1,000 omelet.

The Parker Meridien Hotel recently added the bank-breaking breakfast dish to its menu, charging patrons what it costs to buy about 200 omelets at a local diner.

But the Zillion Dollar Frittata is apparently no ordinary omelet, consisting, as it does, of a mix of eggs, lobster and lots of sevruga caviar, for which the restaurant pays $65 an ounce.

It’s so exclusive, so spectacular and so expensive that … nobody’s ordered one yet.

As with several other menu items, the frittata is highlighted in red ink as one of “Norma’s recommendations.”

For penny pinchers, Norma’s, the restaurant in the Parker Meridien, offers an economy version of the frittata, a crustless quiche that contains 1 ounce of sevruga caviar.

It costs $100. No one has tried that, either.
